PictureSync v1.8 installs an export preset for use with Adobe Photoshop Lightroom version 1.1(+).
- Uploading from Lightroom
- Importing from iPhoto
- Saving metadata from Lightroom
- Syncing between Lightroom and other applications
- Caveats
Uploading from Lightroom
A. Export: preserves all changes made in Lightroom
Select the photos to upload, then either right click and choose Export>PictureSync or open the File menu and choose Export with Preset>PictureSync. Supported metadata will be embedded in the uploaded file and read by PictureSync.
B. Drag and drop: uses only the changes saved to the original file
- Select the images you wish to upload and choose Metadata>Save Metadata to Files. If you have not enabled the Lightroom Automatically write changes preference (File>Catalog Settings>Metadata).
- Drag the selected images from Lightroom (grid view or filmstrip) to PictureSync (its icon, pictures list or the open button).
- OS X's image conversion engine (as with iPhoto, Preview, Aperture, etc.) will be used instead of Lightroom, with RAW some files may not be compatible and colour may differ. Use the Export method above if this is undesirable.
- Lightroom will write metadata into your original files (or XMP sidecars if embedding is not supported by the format).
- Ensure that PictureSync's 'read XMP sidecars' annotations preference is enabled if you are using formats that do not support embedded metadata.
Importing to Lightroom from iPhoto
- Ensure you have nothing selected in iPhoto then launch PictureSync and collapse the pictures list (by clicking the triangle opposite the Open button—this disables thumbnail generation for faster import).
- From iPhoto, select the photos or albums to save annotations for in iPhoto
- In PictureSync click the Open button (do not drag and drop).
- Choose File>Save Annotations. Note that ratings cannot currently be preserved from iPhoto.
- Now drag your selection from iPhoto to Lightroom and it'll read all the annotations PictureSync saved into the original (or modified) files from iPhoto (whether they're in your library or elsewhere).
Saving metadata from Lightroom
If you wish to apply metadata rules before saving to your original files (such as to ensure their correct values appear for the Headline field, as with fields compatibility below) you may use PictureSync to rewrite the values from Lightroom.
- Select the images you wish to save metadata into andMetadataSave Metadata to FilesIf you have not enabled the Lightroom Automatically write changes preference (File>Catalog Settings>Metadata).
- Drag the selected images from Lightroom (grid view or filmstrip) to PictureSync (its icon, pictures list or the open button).
- In PictureSync choose File>Save Annotations.
Syncing metadata between Lightroom and other applications
Firstly you must save the data as above, ensuring the correct value is saved in the Headline field (as below). Then you may swap to your other application and cause it to re-read the metadata from your original files (this only works with referenced files). Syncing with iPhoto is not yet possible, but if you'd like to see this added to PictureSync do send feedback.
Lightroom metadata fields compatibility
Adobe has opted to use the IPTC ObjectName field to read and save the Title as displayed in their default metadata input panel, whereas the IPTC standard suggests the use of Headline, with ObjectName generally used for a file reference (e.g. original file name or a unique photo ID). You should adjust this behaviour as best suits your workflow.
A. Use the IPTC Headline field (Photoshop, Aperture, Expression Media, …)
In the Lightroom Metadata panel, click the Default popup to left of the title, and choose IPTC. Note that the Headline field appears at the top of the Content section, and that the Title from the default setting now appears under Status. No further action will be required for compatability with other applications.
B. Use the IPTC Object Name field (Lightroom, …)
If you're going with option A. above, skip this as it is potentially confusing.
Using PictureSync's powerful rules functionality it's easy to swap the field values so that they are properly preserved and transfered when uploading to providers, whilst allowing you to continue using the Title in Lightroom's Default metadata setting.
- If you never use both the Title and Headline field, you're set to go as PictureSync will automatically copy the Title to the Headline when uploading.
- If you do use both you should enable the Swap Title/Object rule*, so that the Lightroom Title gets displayed as the Title online.
- To import annotations from iPhoto or other applications, you'll want to swap the data in these fields around. In PictureSync, choose Rules from the Window menu and enable the Swap Title/Object rule* before opening the files, and choosing 'Save Annotations'.
- If you are uploading from other applications as well as Lightroom, you should not keep the Swap Title/Object rule* enabled, you may however add a condition of [ Creator Tool ] is [ Adobe Photoshop Lightroom ].
* PictureSync users prior to 1.7 may need to create a rule that applies on read, with a condition of [ all pictures ], sets [ Title ] to [ $object ], and [ Object ] to [ $title ]. Note that if PictureSync is unregistered it will only apply the first three enabled rules.
Caveats
- Moving PictureSync after first use will break the export preset, either delete the preset, or edit its action in Lightroom.
